the Ellington Kid

The Ellington Kid

Dan Sully is the director of the five-minute short film The Ellington Kid. It briefly describes a stabbing that happened in the UK. Two teenagers who are eating in a kebab shop provide the story.  One is telling a story while the other is listening carefully. Throughout the entire movie, there is a constant conflict between comedy and tragedy, and there is dark humour. The joke that one of the boy's hamburgers is created from the stabbed teen's meat brings the movie to a close.

Expectations

At first I thought that this film was going to be a ferris Bueller type short film with a new kid moving into a town where everyone loves him but it was a lot different to that as it featured stabbings with dark humour supplied by Nathan and Beefy

Narrative structure

The movie follows to Syd Field's three-part structure.  In the setup, Nathan and Beefy are introduced to us and Nathan starts telling the Ellington Kid story while in the kebab shop. The Ellington Kid is stabbed and pursued into the kebab restaurant by the gang members in the first story point. Nathan introduces the tension between the gang members and the owners of the kebab shops at the midway mark. Use your imagination, Nathan says, and we could conclude that there was a brawl. When Nathan tells Beefy the rumour that the gang members were killed and turned into hamburgers, the twist in the story is revealed. This is confirmed by the owner of the kebab shop's dramatic facial response as the owner sharpens his knife with a evil smirk.

Cinematography

The five minutes make excellent use of the microelements. The film begins with a close-up shot of one of the kebab shop employees' hands sharpening a long knife, hinting at the coming bloodshed.  He also does the identical action towards the movie's conclusion to provide room for interpretation. The worker smiles a menacing smirk at the two adolescents, leaving the viewers to wonder if the story was true. As we move from the kebab shop to the knife scene and back, the editing is clear. As a result, the movie's suspense is increased. Slow motion is used in some photos to clearly distinguish between the present and the past.
