 slap

Nick Rowland's 25-minute short film Slap covers the problems the lead character experiences as a result of his sexual orientation. It effectively addresses the issue of gender representation in the role of a boxer, a stereotypically masculine role. Connor, a young boy, struggles to balance his life with his upcoming gender transition.

Coming of age and the concept of social realism are the two key elements of Slap's genre. Themes resembling those of the drama genre are also present. Connor must confront the other boys and confess who he really is, but this sparks drama and creates a new stressful environment. The movie follows to one story, which advances the situation.

The head and shoulders of a muscular, athletic-looking male wearing a black vest are depicted on the poster. The broken glass mirror in front of him symbolises a personal struggle or difficulty accepting his reflection as it is. The vivid purple and pink utilised are colours that are more frequently associated with teenage ladies than teenage boys. The title and font don't go together well, hinting at how Connor's enthusiasm for beauty doesn't mesh well with his life as a manly boxer. The word "slap" suggests violence, which contrasts with the gentle font and colours that are often associated with femininity.
